A man in his early 40s was expected to appear before the Francistown
Magistrate Court this morning (Friday) for raping his 13-year-old stepdaughter.
Tatitown Police CID Officer in Charge, Detective Assistant Superintendent Lawrence Nthoiwa said the incident happened on Monday night in Marapong.
“The victim’s mother had travelled to Sebina, leaving the victim and her two siblings in the care of the step father,” Nthoiwa said in an interview
The man reportedly roused the little girl from sleep and offered her two pula.
When the little girl ignored him and pretended to be asleep he picked her up from the floor where she was sleeping with her siblings and had sex with her, Nthoiwa explained.
After the attack, the girl escaped through the widow and alerted neighbours who found the alleged offender gone.
The incident was reported to the police who took the child to Nyangabgwe referral Hospital where she was treated and discharged.
The alleged defiler was arrested on Wednesday morning after he had been on the run for a day.
Nthoiwa warned mothers against leaving female children with stepfathers.
“By leaving children with stepfathers the children’s mothers might be inadvertently exposing them to danger. We advise people to leave children with trusted neighbours or relatives when they are away,” he said.
