It’s Coke and beMobile awards weekend
In just hours, soccer fans will know who has been voted best of the best in the 2009/2010 Premier League awards.
It’s a weekend of award ceremonies, starting tonight, Friday, with individuals’ awards for the Coca-Cola Cup. For the first time this season, the cup was played at the same time with the elite league. Since inception in 1992 the Coke Cup was played as a pre-season tournament.
Tomorrow night, Saturday, it will be the be Mobile Premier awards. Here, one thing clear is that Terrence Mandaza will walk away with the top goal scorer award. The Zimbabwean signed two years ago from Tasc scored a record breaking 31 goals. He surpassed his countrymen’s record of last season by at least four goals. Masitara had scored 27 goals last season before he got a lucrative contract in Mozambique.
It will a second honour in hours, as Mandaza will also going home with the Coke Cup top goal scorer after scoring nine goals in the five Coke games he has played.
It is also expected that one of the Rollers players will walk away with the Coke player of the tournament. The goalkeeper of the tourney is also likely to go ‘The Blues’ way.
With all eyes on the two main events the big question now is who will scoop the biggest of them all. The player of the season is an all Rollers affair as Kabelo Dambe, Terrence Mandaza and Itai Gwandu will battle it out for the P50 000 at stake.
In the Players’ player award where players voted for the one they thought was the best, Rollers still have at least two players in the final four. Dambe is still a nominee and so is the dribbling wizard, Edwin Moalosi. They will fight it out with the ever shining Centre Chiefs attacking midfielder, a former Rollers and Santos player Sekhana Nandos Koko. The fourth nominee is one of the best midfielders this country has ever had and the most undermined. Maano Ditshupo’s peers have put their hands up for him to be in the final four of the best.
The other two awards for the players will be the Supporters’ Player of the Season where football fans were afforded an opportunity to vote for their best player. The supporters were also given an opportunity to vote for yet another player and that will be the ‘Flair Player’ in the fans eyes. The two honours were created as part of an initiative to involve the fans in the game.
Of course, be Mobile League and Coca Cola champions, Rollers, will be crowned in the two nights. But there may be more for the team of the moment. The double-winning coach, Rahman Gumbo is among the finalists with former Santos mentor, Clever Hunda now with Police X1 and Gunners’ Daniel ‘Chico’ Nare. All three have done exceptionally well with their clubs. While Gumbo won the league, Hunda took Santos to the top three. Nare has also guided Gunners to a smart top four position. The winner walks away with P10 000.
