A Shakawe police officer is nursing a fractured elbow after she was attacked by a mentally challenged man in an arrest that went wrong.
Sub Inspector Disho of Shakawe police together with her colleague, Constable Majeremane on Saturday responded to a report to the effect that an intruder had damaged a gate to a plot belonging to Minister Thapelo Olopeng in Shakawe and that he had chopped down some trees.
When the police officers arrived at the suspect’s place he refused to get arrested.
They then tried to forcefully arrest him and during the fracas, the 28-year old suspect took his handmade axe and swung it and slashed Sub Inspector Disho on the elbow.
The Police officer sustained a fracture and was rushed to Shakawe clinic where she was later referred to Princess Marina Hospital to see an Orthopedic.
Shakawe Police Station Commander, Superintendent Goitsemodimo Molapisi, confirmed the incident and said the matter is still being pursued jointly with psychiatrists. “The suspect is in our custody and we’re working with health authorities to acquire a reception order so that he can be examined at a mental institution to determine his health status. If he is found to be of sound health, the initial charge of Malicious damage to property as well as the ensuing grievious harm and resisting arrest charges will be leveled against him,” he said.
