Fashion fanatics and Voice columinists Tsholo Dikobe and Gaone Mothibi popularly as Gatshfros are going to London.
The rising fashion princess whose other half, Tsholo Dikobe has been named a brand ambassador of Africa Fashion Week, London were thrilled about the nomination but didn’t have the financial means to travel to London.
This week, The Voice newspaper which has given the Gatshy girls a platform to showcase their talent to the rest of the world to sponsor part of the freelance fashion writers’ London trip expenses.
Receiving their P12, 000 sponsorship cheque from Voice General Manager, Gomolemo Kasale, Dikobe and Mothibi expressed excitement and gratitude for the newspaper’s generous act.
“The money from The Voice will cover a return ticket for one of us and a bit of expenses for the five days we will be in London.
It is not enough and we hope The Voice has set a precedent for other sponsors to come on board and assist us with travel cost for the other fro because this is yet another opportunity to put Botswana on the map,” said Dikobe.
As the ambassador of the African Fashion Week, London, Dikobe’s role will entail scouting for talent through Africa, looking for emerging as well as established designers who are doing profound work.
“The job entails a lot but it is nothing I cannot handle. Already I have identified a few designers who I have recommended to AFWL from Botswana such as jewelry designer of African Lace and a few others.
I am open to receiving portfolios or a heads up on designers who are doing good work from all corners of Africa,” Dikobe has said.
Africa Fashion Week London is on its third year running since and it is one of the biggest African events of its kind in Europe with the aim to highlight the industry’s established and emerging African designers.
Batswana designers who took part in AFWL in the past include Botho Chalegwa, Thato Teez, Buhle Mguni and Black Trash.
This year’s AFWL will take place on the 8th and the 9th of August in Olympias, London, and Tsholo Dikobe can be expected to feature not only as a brand ambassador but also as a designer alongside her partner Gaone Mothibi.
