More than 60 golfers will this weekend converge at the Francistown Golf Club for the annual Metropolitan Golf Open.
Sponsored by insurance brokers, Metropolitan Life Botswana to the tune of P100.000, 00, the two- day event is the biggest Botswana Golf Union sanctioned tournament in the northern part of the country.
Metropolitan’s Retail Marketing Consultant, Tebogo Toteng said that by sponsoring this tournament, the insurance company was helping preserve and celebrate Francistown’s history.
“The Francistown Golf Club, arguably the most difficult golf course in Botswana is also the oldest in the country.
It is one of the few remaining monuments that define the history of this city. It is a history we need to cherish and protect.
It will be a mistake if we allow industrialization and commercial efforts to override the need to protect our heritage” Toteng said.
On another note Toteng said that Metropolitan’s commitment to sports development over the years was a deliberate move to ensure that the company remains relevant to the changing needs of the sporting community and the country at large.
“We have no doubt that sport offers an opportunity for employment and entertainment. The economic environment is mild and resources are strained but we have chosen to invest in the future of the city. We want to be part of attempts to diversify the economy through events tourism,” Toteng added.
Meanwhile Francistown resident and Francistown Golf Club member, Dave Bestman, thanked Metropolitan for pumping cash into Ghetto Golf.”
“Metropolitan are our saviours. They also sponsored the event last year. This is good for both golf and the city. All we can do is thank them and call on other business houses to help out as well,” Bestman told Voice Sport at the tournament launch.
