Francistown Councillors are expected to support a motion calling for the adjustment of Full Council sitting allowance.
Kanana Ward Councillor Cornelius Gopolang will table the motion at the council’s next sitting asking the council to request the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to adjust the allowance to P500.
The sitting allowance currently stands at P200 and according to Gopolang this amount is not ideal for such a high level meeting.
In an interview with The Voice, Gopolang said they convene four times a year in pursuit of the National Development agenda and therefore the sitting allowance for Full Council should not be equivalent to the Ordinary Committee meetings of the council.
“Full Council is the highest decision making committee in the whole district and it should be given that status and that should reflect in the sitting allowance,” reasoned Gopolang.
The outspoken Councillor who was seconder to a motion that recently forced Francistown City Council to halt their Full Council agenda to visit wards in the city said the P200 they currently get is not befitting the level of quarterly sitting.
“There are Central Government Committees like Liquor, Trade and Physical Planning whose sitting allowance is a minimum of P500 and can go up to P1000. We are asking to be brought onboard as we also contribute to the National Development Plan (NDP).
Gopolang said without their input through the Urban Development Plan (UDP), Central Government would not be able to compile the NDP.
“Full Council is a high profile meeting. It is compulsory and should you miss it three times in a row, you’ll automatically be dismissed as a councilor,” said Gopolang.
“I have received overwhelming support from fellow Councilors and I’m confident that this motion will be adopted by the house in the next sitting,” he said.
