Gumare United Football Club are mourning the death of five of their players who died in a freak road accident on Friday night.
Maun police Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Peter Gochela, told The Voice in an interview that a Ford Ranger van carrying 14 players overturned in Tsau village at around 11:25 on Friday night and five players lost their lives.
The team was said to have been on the way to play at a constituency tournament.
“This is a very sensitive matter. Seven other players are still being treated at Letsholathebe Hospital in Maun while three have been transferred to Nyangagbwe Referal Hospital,” said Gochela.
Gumare Police Station Commander Dennis Zilawe confirmed the horrific accident to The Voice in a telephone interview.
“Although it did not happen in my jurisdiction I can confirm the incident because some of the department deceased are residents of Gumare. It is a Gumare team, but we are all still waiting for police to complete their investigations,” said Zilawe.
