Fake traditional doctor beaten and ordered to pay back
A Letlhakane fake traditional doctor found out the hard way that cheating does not pay after he was caught, beaten up and ordered to pay the victim back.
When Gadzanani Tiego (53) resurfaced after disappearing without a trace for six years he met his victims who gave him a good hiding for being dodgy and dragged him to the police where he was charged with obtaining by false pretense.
Palapye customary court this week heard that Gothusang Gaboneelanwe (35) and Tshepoyame Olateleng went to seek help from Tiego after they heard he is related to the famed traditional doctor, the late Spirichaiye.
“I believed he was a doctor because he comes from a dancing family. I paid him P500 to be cleansed, P400 for a goat I never got and P500 for the cure. After a while I realized I had not been healed but he was nowhere to be found. His phone was also not available.”
Tiego told the court that when he was done with the two men he went to the cattle post to look after his cattle. He said in 2011 he got into a fight, which earned him jail time until 2014.
“A misunderstanding resulted in a fight and I lost my teeth and was locked up. When I came out I was ill and still very weak and have been going from hospital to hospital. I’m actually from hospital now,” said Tiego who had pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Kgosi Masego Olebile chided Tiego and ordered him to pay back P900.
“Maybe you filled the bath with just tap water when you were supposed to cleanse your client. It’s very sad and we need to stop such crimes. You are no different from the crooks who swindle people by claiming to pray for them to get rich,” said the chief.
Tiego’s one year sentence was suspended for a year provided he did not commit a similar crime.
