Come August 11-13 this semi-desert country will be coloured with beauty as local models take to the ramp to showcase some of Africa’s exciting designs. The three day show shall take place at Phakalane Golf Estate. The concept was put together by two vibrant Batswana business women Tsoseletso Magang and Mpho Kuaho, to promote the local fashion design and Clothing & Textile industry in Botswana which they are both very passionate about.
The two ladies have roped in the internationally acclaimed Jan Malan of Umzingeli fame. Umzingeli is one of Africa’s best known and most respected show production companies working on a wide range of fashion and entertainment related events across the continent and throughout the rest of the world.
Jan established Umzingeli following the conceptualization and orchestration of the “Face of Africa Search” for MNET in 1997. More work includes the launch of “Africa Designs” for MNET and AngloGold which gave African designers their first opportunity to showcase at New York Fashion Week, followed by ‘Afridesia’ for AngloGold which also culminated at New York Fashion Week.
Watching him last Saturday during the model cast in Phakalane I quickly realized that the dude is very comfortable with what he does. He knew what he wanted and he stuck to it. It was very painful to watch some hopeful models rejected because they did not meet the required height of at least 1.7 metres.
For a lay man like me I learnt to appreciate the modeling industry, the courage displayed by ladies and guys just to so they could live their dreams is amazing; and the fact that they keep coming back to try their luck is even more humbling. Big up to all the amateur models, your dreams are within reach.
