Tuesday 23 April represents a double celebration for emerging artist Chido Maitumelo Thapa, as she celebrates turning 22 with the release of her debut single, ‘Chido Changu’ (My Love).
The former My Star contestant, who narrowly missed out on a Top 10 place in last year’s competition, revealed the song is about a young girl who falls in love at first sight.
“She is walking towards the sunset when she meets this handsome gentleman. She tells the young man that he is her love and her happiness. Breaking his heart and seeing his tears would never be an option to her,” explained the Makaleng native, who cites her mother and Kelly Khumalo as her inspiration.
In a bid to exploit what she described as ‘a gap in the market’, Chido decided to record ‘Chido Changu’ in Kalanga as a House track.
“I have noticed that there are less House female artists in Botswana. There is no female artist who sings House in Kalanga therefore I want to be the first in the industry. I want to uplift the Ikalanga culture through house music,” said the University of Botswana Theatre student, who is also fluent in Ndebele, Setswana, Venda, Shona and English.
Chido has high hopes for the future, setting her sights on becoming the best female House artist in the country within the next five years.
“I will not say I am not threatened but all I can say is my uniqueness, talent and the way I deliver it to my fans will help me achieve my ambition,” the singer told Voice Entertainment confidently.
However, despite he confidence, Chido admits the competition is extremely tough as Botswana has ‘raw talent that is still undercover’.
“Well, for someone to make it in the Bw music industry, one has to have the right connections and the right supporters. I did not have any so I decided to join My Star Season 12 to get exposure. The journey was really tough.
“The drill of the show is to make sure that you do not go home which means more votes are needed. I had to do the best I can because I knew that this was the only platform I could use to get people to know about my talent,” closed the qualified make-up artist.
‘Chido Changu’ was produced, arranged and mastered in Gaborone West by Dj Kaizer.
