Phitshane Molopo Police moved swiftly and thwarted a possible cross border car-theft attempt by three men over the weekend.
Two Batswana, Michael Sekgaudi (27) and Keaoboka Bantatetse (30) and a Swazi national Sandile Sidwell Mavuso (31) were nabbed on their tracks on Sunday afternoon at the Phitshane Molopo border gate as they tried to cross into South Africa.
When they failed to account for a Toyota Fortune vehicle they were driving, a laptop and R49 800.00 in their possession the police took them into custody for questioning.
Assistant Superintendent Benjamin Modimoosi says the suspects’ trail led them to Naledi Police Station in Gaborone where the laptop had been reported stolen.
“We searched the vehicle and recovered some documents that had names of the owner. When we asked them about him they told us that he was hospitalized at Princess Marina hospital. We found out that they lied. They did not even know where he stayed and we arrested them and impounded the vehicle,” he said.
A team from the Serious Crime Squad have since been gaged and are working with the South African Police for further investigations.
