A 13- year- old boy drowned in Metsimasweu River in Serowe on Tuesday while trying to retrieve his ball which had been kicked into the river.

The boy was playing soccer with his friends when the incident occured.

According to Assistant Superintendent Bopelo Ntatiwa of Serowe police, the boy dived into the river hoping to get the ball but drowned as he could not swim.

Ntatiwa said seeing that their friend had drowned, the other boys rushed and reported the matter to his parents who then alerted the police.

“We arrived at the scene and searched for the boy’s body, it was discovered and immediately taken to Sekgoma hospital where he was certified dead,” he said said.

He advised parent’s to caution their children against playing near water bodies and not attempt to jump in when they cannot swim.
