Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) Councilor’s wife, Boikanyo Mmualefe is fighting for her life after drinking tea with milk suspected to be laced with poison.
Mmualafe is currently in a comma at Scottish Livingstone Hospital Intensive Care Unit in Molepolole.
Her neighbour who also drank the tea at the Mmualefe’s residence is recuperating at the same hospital.
After the incident the victim’s husband, councilor Moses Mmualefe of Boribamo ward in Molepolole gave the milk and tea to his three dogs and they both died immediately, confirming the worried husband’s suspicions that his wife had been poisoned.
Speaking in an interview councilor Mmualefe said on Friday they brought milk from the cattle post, which they used on Saturday and Sunday without an incident.
“On Sunday my wife and I went out, leaving our grandson at home. We returned at night and on Monday morning my wife made tea, which I did not drink as I was rushing to attend full council meeting,” said Mmualefe
When he arrived home after the meeting he found his wife on the couch, and the neighbour laying on the flour both unconscious. The two had vomited before, Mmualefe said.
‘I alerted neighbours, rushed to the nearest clinic and nurses came with the ambulance and they were both taken to the hospital. There was some tea in cups, slices of bread and meat so we took them to the hospital for testing. Veterinary Department also took one dead dog to do some tests and we are waiting for the results,’ he explained
Asked if they had any suspects in mind, the councilor said his grandson likes to leave the key under a brick when going out so whoever poisoned the milk might have used the key to gain entry.
Molepolole Police Station Commander, Charles Mbengwa said they were still investigating the exact cause of illnesses.
