BCP’s Lubinda joins BMD as battle for Man West looms

Botswana Congress Party’s Parliamentary candidate for Maun West in the 2014 general elections, George Lubinda, has resigned from the party.

Lubinda’s resignation follows reports of negotiations within the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) to get Vice President, Dumelang Saleshando, to represent the Umbrella at Maun West Constituency.

Although he dismissed having been pushed by Saleshando’s move, Lubinda was surprised at how his membership application to Botswana Movement fo Democracy was leaked to the media.

“Yes I have resigned because my private life and businesses were suffering because of politics and I want to divert my attention hence my resignation, however I cannot comment on the BMD move because I am surprised at how you know about it.”

News from the constituency are that Lubinda will be BMD’s candidate as the party does not want to give the constituency away to BCP.

BCP’s North West Regional Chairman, Goretetse Kekgonegike, confirmed having received Lubinda’s resignation but said that as the party they were yet to meet Lubinda to hear his reasons. “We cannot let a member of his calibre to go without addressing his problems.”

Kekgonegile however refused to comment on whether Lubinda was not pushed by being overlooked in preference of Saleshando.

Efforts to get a comment from BMD failed as the party spokesperson could not be reached.
