Electorates who still wish to see Botswana Congress Party joining the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) should forget it if what the BCP’s Secretary for Publicity Vain Mamela’s words are anything to go by.
Speaking at a BCP rally at Mogotlhong Freedom Square in Maun recently, Mamela said that the electoral pact system would have been a better model of opposition collaboration than the umbrella system.
Describing the umbrella as a fake tool without a policy document to guide it, Mamela said: “We have made it clear that we are not going to be part of the umbrella and we are not ashamed of that.
BCP had a good relationship with the Botswana National Front (BNF) until Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) came between us.”
He referred to BMD as an instrument used by the ruling Botswana Democratic party to divide and weaken the opposition, citing the going back to the BDP of many BMD founders as a sign that they had completed their mission of causing confusion in the opposition.
The seasoned freedom square orator took a swipe at the BNF President, Duma Boko saying that he should be told that politics is not a beauty contest.
“BNF chose a comedian to lead them and he should be told that politics is not a beauty contest.
He will be defeated by those uglier than Marshmallow Dabutha,” he said throwing the crowd into peels of laughter BNF has a tendency to pick anything to represent them while the (BCP) have a culture of grooming their leaders.”
He said and used BCP president, Dumelang Saleshando as an example of a leader who has been well groomed by the party.
Ridiculing Book further for having admitted that he had never voted in any general elections, Mamela said that people should not be shocked to find a spoilt vote belonging to Boko in the 2014 general elections.
The former Francistown South Member of Parliament went on to explain to his audience that his party recently made a mistake by fielding a former soldier in unshaken bye- elections without realising that he was not a 2009 registered voter.
“We made a mistake and we have decided to throw our weight behind the BNF candidate Filbert Nagafela in the upcoming Letlhakeng West by elections.
We therefore encourage BCP members and supporters in the area to vote for him although the BNF doesn’t seem to appreciate our efforts, ” he said.
