A 30-year-old man of Shakawe died in hospital following a freak hippopotamus attack while he was crossing the Okavango river in a dugout canoe over the weekend.
Deputy Officer Commanding for District No5, John Kelebeng, said the deceased was with his friend in the canoe when the incident happened.
The friend who managed to escape the attack told the police that out of nowhere the hippo appeared and attacked them whilst they were in the middle of the river.
“The hippo is said to have capsized and crushed the canoe before attacking the deceased, ripping both his legs off while the friend escaped unhurt,” Kelebeng said.
He added that after the incident the man was rushed to Gumare Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries and died the following day.
