Acting Minister of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security Dr Alfred Madigele says there are 31 Batswana owned companies that are currently involved in diamond sales and marketing.
Madigele who was standing in for Minister Sadique Kebonang was answering a Parliamentary question posed by the Member of Parliament for Jwaneng/Mabutsane Shawn Ntlhaile.
Ntlhaile had wanted to know if the Minister was aware of any companies owned by indigenous Batswana involved in diamond sales and marketing as well as steps that were being followed to open access for Batswana into this market. Read more
“There are 31 Batswana companies involved in diamond sales and marketing. The names cannot be disclosed as the information is confidential. The shareholding ranges from 20 per cent to 100 per cent,” Madigele said in response.
The Acting Minister further said that none of the companies operate offices or agencies in foreign countries. “Batswana are exposed to the diamond business through business development seminars conducted by the ministry through the Diamond Hub. The ministry is also in the process of reviewing diamond beneficiation with a view to developing a diamond beneficiation strategy that will guide on creating an enabling environment for Batswana,” he said.
Madigele was however not prepared to provide a definite answer to Gabane/Mankgodi legislator, Major General Pius Mokgware, who wanted to know why the names of the companies were confidential. “I wish the Honourable Member can put it as a fresh question so that I can check it out,” Madigele said.
