Bokaa murdered woman’s family speaks of years of abuse at hands of the accused
Relatives of a 31-year-old Bokaa woman whose body was found in a septic tank two days after she disappeared are blaming the police for her death.
Kedibonye Manti Diphatse’s body was found last Tuesday after a lengthy search at her employer’s home by the police, her relatives and members of the public. Her boyfriend of more than 15 years, Leabua Ipuseng Matlhape (36) has been arrested and charged with murder.
Mochudi Station Commander Onneetse Gagogosha confirmed the incident saying the suspect, Ipuseng Matlhape is in custody and will appear in court soon.
When The Voice visited Diphatse’s relatives in Bokaa on Tuesday we learnt that the murdered woman had been suffering abuse from the father of her four children, two of whom are dead, since they met and impregnated her whilst she was a student at Letsopa CJSS.
“Throughout their life together they were always fighting. The boy beat her regularly. We tried to get both parents together to help them make peace but in vain. We eventually reported the matter to the police twice but they never took any action. If the police had taken some action my niece would probably be alive today. If the police cannot protect us we do not know who will,” said the murdered woman’s uncle, Mmuseng Clarkson Bodika.
He went on to say even on the day Manti was reported missing the police took their time and only arrived late afternoon.
Bodika’s sentiments were echoed by Manti’s elder brother, Odirile and elder sister Mosidi who said the police failed to intervene even when Matlhape throttled Manti with a pair of trousers and left her for the dead.
“We reported two incidents and after the police failed to act Matlhape went around the village boasting that he was untouchable as he was friends with the police. The police should have saved my little sister from this beast,” Mosidi said.
“I am hurt and will never forget that had the police acted my sister would probably be alive”, Odirile told The Voice.
Commenting on allegations of police negligence police boss Gagogosha said; “I am aware of only one case which was reported on June 14 this year. We charged Matlhape with common assault. It’s unfortunate that Manti died before we could take the case to court.”
